FAQs About Cleaning out Your Wardrobe

There are things in life that you cannot determine: the first snowfall of winter, the line at the grocery store or the winning lottery numbers. However, your presentation to friends, coworkers and strangers is well within your power. Visual appearance says more about you as an individual than anything else, which is why the adage "You only have one time to make a first impression" is so ingrained. You control what you wear, so choose wisely.
- Q: How do you begin to build a wardrobe?
- A: Obviously it is not practical to burn everything in your closet and replace everything with three-piece suits or evening gowns. Begin by going through your current wardrobe. If you have not worn an item in over a year, if it no longer fits or needs to repair, then it is time to say goodbye. Your local Goodwill or homeless shelter appreciates those clothes, as well as freeing up much-needed space for the new you.
- Q: What type of wardrobe do you need?
- A: Stay true to who you are, but just dress it up a notch. If you work within the comfort of your own home, you should not resign yourself to sweatpants and ripped t-shirts. Ask a trusted family member or friend to go with you or have a sales clerk assist you (that is what they are paid to do). Invest in a quality suit or dress for important occasions. Quality clothing not only looks and fits better, but also lasts longer.
