Wardrobe Decorating Tips

Although the humble closet has been the most popular clothing storage option as of late, wardrobes and armoires are returning to the mainstream with the added benefits of convenience and customization. Unlike a stationary and hidden closet, an armoire or wardrobe can easily be turned into a centerpiece, just by utilizing some creativity and a little elbow grease. For those desirous of more ambitious and original pieces, decorating in a rainbow of colors also works.
Painting your Armoire or Wardrobe
Painting an armoire or wardrobe is easy and can cover up scuffs and signs of wear that would otherwise be visible. Simply sanding the wardrobe prepares the surface, and adding a soft-toned paint, even a milk-based paint, keeps an armoire or wardrobe looking conservative and dignified. Remember to sand the entire wardrobe prior to painting, otherwise pooling spots may appear. If your armoire or wardrobe has any particularly deep gashes a little wood putty will easily fill the gap.
Staining your Armoire or Wardrobe
If you wish to restore your armoire wardrobe to its former magnificence, staining remains the best choice, and the cheapest. As with painting, sanding the wardrobe is a must especially since any rough spots or remaining veneer will still be visible. When applying stain, do so in thin, even layers, and allow the stain to dry in between applications. The process may take extra time and patience, but the rich coloring is worth it.
Getting creative
Whether your armoire or wardrobe sits in a child's room or you have a passion for colorful pieces, getting creative with decorating remains a fun and fascinating option. Get cans of fluorescent spray paint and stencil words and decorations on the drawers and sides. Use heaps of glitter or glitter pens. Let your child's friends sign their names with permanent marker, then coat with a sealant so the memories last forever.
